At first, this buildup is subtle; many people don’t notice a cataract in its early stages. However, if left untreated, cataracts eventually impair vision or even cause blindness.
Most cataracts occur because of age, and the severity of the condition often depends on genetics. But some cataracts are caused by the following:
- They are present at birth (congenital cataracts)
- They result from eye injury (traumatic cataracts)
- They arise from radiation exposure (radiation cataracts)
- They are complications of diabetes, glaucoma, or certain medications (secondary cataracts)
