Eye Exams for Children
Children starting kindergarten or entering school in Illinois for the first time are required to have a comprehensive eye exam. Parents must submit proof of the eye exam by October 15th.
These exams are necessary to diagnose and treat eye diseases and disorders early. Without treatment, conditions such as amblyopia (“lazy eye”), retinoblastoma, and strabismus may lead to vision loss. In fact, vision disorders are considered the fourth most common disability in the United States, even though many vision problems are preventable or treatable if caught early.
Worried About Cost? Don’t.
Approximately 70 percent of children are insured for comprehensive eye exams through Medicaid, private insurance, S-CHIP, or state and federal programs. Many ophthalmologists, optometrists, and local charitable organizations give assistance for families in need.

Eye Exams for Adults
When you bring your child in for an eye exam, don’t forget to get one for yourself. Adults should have their eyes tested to check for early signs of disease as well as to keep their prescriptions current.
We recommend an annual eye examination for every adult over 40. Even if you are not experiencing any problems with your vision, you should come in for a checkup. Many diseases, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma, have no symptoms in their early stages. In most cases, early detection and treatment reduces your risk for permanent vision loss.
During your comprehensive eye examination, our staff will check the following:
- Intraocular eye pressure: This identifies if you have glaucoma.
- Lens health: This shows if you have cataracts forming.
- Moisture level: This lets us know if dry-eye treatment would make your vision more comfortable and clearer.
- Retina health: This locates any damage that could negatively impact your eyesight, such as age-related macular degeneration.
- Visual acuity: This determines if corrective lenses, laser vision correction (LASIK), or another procedure would be beneficial.
These procedures will also help us know if you need glasses or contact lenses. If so, our highly trained optometrists will show you all the available lenses and will help you determine the best lens to fit your lifestyle needs.
ESC offers frames a variety of frames, including many name brands and customized lenses. We also offer contact lenses, including keratoconus, disposables, and specialty lenses.
